TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon Watch Will Cost About $15,000

TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon Watch Will Cost About $15,000 Watch Releases

Later in 2015, TAG Heuer will release a new tourbillon version of the TAG Heuer Carrera (ref. CAR2A8Y.FT6044) that will be priced at 14,900 Swiss Francs. I saw a picture of the upcoming TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon while with TAG Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver who was excited to show it to me. With the “lower-end price” of a Swiss tourbillon costing $40,000 or so, and tourbillons being included in watches that cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, Jean-Claude Biver is certainly trying to make a splash this year at Baselworld 2015 with a series of big announcements for the brand. This is also the first Baselworld watch trade show that Jean-Claude Biver has been in this particular leadership position at TAG Heuer.

TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon Watch Will Cost About $15,000 Watch Releases

Early during the Baselworld 2015 show TAG Heuer announced a partnership with Intel and Google on an upcoming smartwatch that will come toward the end of 2015. Now, towards the end of the show, TAG Heuer has allowed us to share news about their very competitively priced Swiss tourbillon timepiece based on the new Carrera 01 collection with its aggressive sport styling that will have a 45mm wide case produced from steel and titanium. In my opinion, Jean-Claude Biver intends for the Carrera 01 to be a sort of “baby Hublot” for those keen on the modern “open work” styling of many Hublot Big Bang watches, but without the budget for one. The TAG Heuer Carrera 01 will be priced at 4,900 Swiss Francs and the tourbillon version will be priced at 10,000 Swiss Francs more.

We will update this post in a few days with better images of the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon for 2015 but I can say that it will have a black-and-blue color theme (as opposed to the black and red color theme of the Carrera 01). There might also be a more monochromatic version. Apparently, the movement for this tourbillon will be adapted from the “on hold” TAG Heuer in-house made caliber CH 80 chronograph movement that the brand decided to not seriously put into production at this time in order to focus more on its caliber 1887 movement (which is the base for the TAG Heuer caliber 01). TAG Heuer will call the Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon movement the calibre Heuer 02, and it means the Carrera Chronograph tourbillon will have a power reserve of about 60 hours and operate at 4Hz.

TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon Watch Will Cost About $15,000 Watch Releases

Jean-Claude Biver made it very clear to me a few months ago that the future of TAG Heuer was in more traditional pricing and ceasing focus on its very high-end watches that includes some exotic chronographs and tourbillons. In practice that has certainly been the case and Biver’s tactic seems to be implementing very aggressive pricing for models with in-house made movements, but there are still some higher-end models such as 45,000 Swiss Francs V4 Phantom Carbon and the upcoming 14,900 Swiss Franc TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon CAR2A8Y.FT6044 that we’ll learn more about later in 2015.

Godammit, Jean-Claude!  TAG did nothing to deserve this. No one’s been screaming for Hublot lite?  Please keep your “one-note creativity” the hell away from the rest of the Carrera line. The only thing the Carerra o1 collection does is lower the price point for tasteless douchebag Hubloista wannabees.
I dread the endless colorway of the week,  LEGO parts swap bullshit, “new” designs to come pouring out. GAAAAAAAAH!

  • Tri-Linh Christian Lu

Did I read it right in the article? A future tourbillon for 10000 CHF?

  • Gary Sungulyan

    Made in China lol

  • Ultra Group

Not that bad if you take in to consideration the usual price for Swiss Tourbillon

  • Aaron Samuel

    Not bad for a tourbillion!

  • DG Cayse

Another useless complication tossed in for effete dilettantes.

  • Tim Siragusa

I can imagine TAG’s salespeople struggling to explain it to customers. Good grief. They’ll be like deer in the glare of headlights.

  • Ulysses31

Leave it to Biver….  I can’t believe that this is a Tag.  The crusty old man has little in the way of creativity and it shows if this is really an indication of the direction he wants to take Tag in.  There’s a difference between being bold and being reckless.  Hublot are the high-end Invicta – big, bold, and designed to simultaneously evoke shock and disgust.  Tag was never that kind of company and I don’t think trying to assimilate them into the Hublot Collective by pushing designs like this will do anything to help the brand.

  • Emperius

Shocker? Not. Was called, and expected by everyone here. Anything Biver touches, it is spoiled.

  • henryus

It looks like everything one liked or disliked in Hublot is coming down to Tag ala Biver, trickle down economy anyone? Like it or not, Biver knows the masses and they’ll lap it up just like they do with Hublot and Invicta. The only missing link is the middle price segment and here it is, the new Tag!  Hublot – Tag – Invicta. Now it goes to reason, if Biver succeeds with Tag, he can complete his world domination by taking over Invicta if he hasn’t done so already.

  • DangerussArt

Ulysses31 if you haven’t seen them, the non- tourby Carrera 01 model looks even more Hublowy than this does:

  • henryus

Not trying to be contrarian, but the recent Tags were languishing in the 90’s success. It was high time it changed it up for better or for worse. Personally, I like the refresh. It Gives it a little more airiness, more sporty feel, and in line with current trends and perhaps gets it back into what it means to be “sporty” or “relevant” in today’s market.

  • In other industries, a barrage of announcements about products that will exist real soon now is called vaporware, typically put on when parading before investors or buyers. Just saying…

  • Grinnie Jax

Oh, please… I want to cry. Why on this Earth one of the most definitive and charismatic sport watch brands got into hands of old barbarian? And here it is, CarreVicta… The virus of Hublotis keeps destroying everything it touches.

  • lurgee

You may disagree with the man (and I certainly disagree with the countless more-of-the-same Hublots), but he does know what the market wants, so like it or not, the new Carrera 01 will probably sell like hotcakes and because it’s modular, margins will be sky-high.

And let’s not forget, this is a man charged with making a company money, not appealing to purists.

    1960s: Steve McQueen

    2015: Russel Westbrook!

  • ZL

Wow, comments here are entertaining! “Leave it to Biver,” “Hublot Lite” ….I love it. I am something of a TAG fan, and you will find me bitching about Big Bangs on occasion, but I find that the TAG fan in me overpowers the disdain for Hublot ostentation & cockiness (less so, the watches themselves), and I’m actually excited about both of these obviously Biverian twists at TAG. In fact, I do not think they are out of character at all with some of the sportier racing TAGs already out there.

  • DangerussArt

JCB can have his Carrera 01 plaything, and perhaps it will be a moneymaker. What I’ll hate is the dilution of the core TAG stylistic DNA. As long as he limits himself to the 01, that’ll be fine. I’ll just ignore the goofy looking inbred relative he’s sired.

  • 5803822

CNN mentioned a good looking watch at 2015 Basel – could’nt catch the name but it combined mechanical with non mechanical enhancement – could this be the first of many?

  • I look forward to the day when JCB will become the CEO of Invicta…

  • Hublot haters are the funniest. Get over yourselves, seriously.

  • Frauss

At last! A tourbillion for the masses! Wait a minute…either this tourbillion is junk or…everybody else’s tourbillions are overpriced…Could this be?

  • Grinnie Jax

Frauss I know a guy who bought this Android Tourbillon for 699$ when it was heavily discounted on their website:
Yes, its a chinese movement, but its really working! So, I believe that the value of tourbillons is overestimated.
P.S. However, he is selling this watch now, because it is ridiculously enormous.

  • Naysayer

It looks like WALL·E. No. Just no.

  • pt950nomad

So first Tag Heure buys the rights to a chronograph movement from Seiko, did they get this tourbillon from Chinese manufacturer “Sea-Gull”? A.L. Breguet must be rolling in his grave right now.

  • aleximd2000

pt950nomad generally I agree with u but remember a year or so hublot bought a tourbillon factory and the heuer caliber in house was not so difficult tp built because they have the intelligence and know how to make a brand new caliber. And after all do not underestimate the seiko. If they stretch their muscle very interesting things can happen . The politics was the same as witrh BMW and land rover . After they had the plans for a jeep they sold the rover and kept the jeep and the mini. JC Biver is a genius in his field. And has a big brother LVMH.

  • aleximd2000

    Frauss overpriced
give the people what they want.

  • aleximd2000

Panagiotis they put inside a huge 1000 day power reserve on liquid hydrogen. And you have to wear it on a pitbull gold chain in your neck.

  • aleximd2000

    DangerussArt Ulysses31
I will buy one no matter what. i like just Borat say so

  • aleximd2000

henryus I agree 100% in refreshing the brand
you are without a point with a thousand,s of second chrono on your hand but this one looks very testosterone like

  • sigp226

Does it only come in black and gray like in the pic?

  • henryus

Panagiotis Heck, if JCB can bring Hublot to price point of 200 USD in form of Invicta, then I’ll buy one just for curiosity sake. I imagine it’ll realistically take 20 years. But that’d be a sight to see. JCB will be known as the man who brought Hublot to the masses. Rejoice?

  • Josefina Patiño Núñez

  • Wow, I really want this watch, but will wait for the Smartwatch. It should blow Samsung and Apple away.

    • Jon Martin

      How’d that turn out.

  • Mike Brown

You can sure tell Biver is at the helm…….Hublot look alike!

  • funNactive

Impressive price for a Swiss Tourbillon

  • Jon Martin

Shut up and take my money.
